Why dream of a cylinder?
Many drivers spend very little time with this small detail. However, it is an element that performs many functions associated with the normal operation of the engine. We will try to figure out why the cylinder head gasket is needed, how and when it is replaced.
WHAT IS THE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET?
The cylinder head gasket is used to create a tight connection between the cylinder block and its head. Simply put, it is a seal and isolates three car systems at once. These include gas distribution, lubrication and engine cooling.
Since this part works in rather difficult conditions, the greatest demands should be placed on it. That is why it is not recommended to install a gasket on the engine, which is made of low-quality material, unsuitable for high temperatures and mechanical loads.
Gaskets have a different shape, depending on the type of engine. Otherwise, their design is similar and isolates the engine cylinders, the joints of the various elements of the systems, as well as the points at which the bolt connection of the cylinder head and the cylinder block is provided. However, the material can be completely different.
TYPES OF CYLINDER HEAD GASKETS:
1. Metallic . Are the most effective. Due to the excellent specific pressure, which is distributed over the entire area of contact, the most tight and high-quality connection is achieved.
2. Asbestos . Such gaskets have good heat resistance and elasticity. These parameters allow them to ensure a long service life and high quality connections. Their main difference is good recoverability and minimal ability to shrink. Along with asbestos used as a repair kit.
WHEN YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
Gaskets of different materials have a different service life. Moreover, this period is unpredictable and significantly shortens when the engine overheats. However, there are a number of signs by which it can be determined that the seal has become unusable.
Gasket replacement is performed in cases when signs of its malfunction are detected or the cylinder head is replaced or repaired. This item is a consumable item and can not be repaired.
Detailed instructions for replacing the gasket should be contained in the relevant literature for your engine model. However, the disassembly process is generally the same for any engine.
This completes the replacement gasket. Despite the simplicity of the process, it is recommended to replace the gasket only in specialized service centers, as this is a responsible matter, on which the further state of the engine depends. However, do-it-yourself replacement of this part will only increase your mechanic skill and become a valuable experience in the future. All the best and good luck on the road! Why dream of a cylinder?

Valve guides
Valve guides are one of the most important parts of any engine. They provide precise valve entry, as well as opening and closing them at the right time.
The use of guide bushings in internal combustion engines is due to their ability to quickly dissipate heat. The fact is that the engines in the 50s had a cast-iron cylinder head, which had the property to overheat very quickly and increased oil consumption. If the sleeves provide the connection of the head and the valve mechanism, then without them the mechanism had a close connection with the head, which did not create the necessary conditions for heat removal.
Thus, valve guide bushings are needed to remove heat, to ensure minimum oil consumption, and to position the valve accurately over the orifice.
THE DESIGN AND PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF THE GUIDE BUSHINGS
The guide sleeve is made exclusively of metal and can be made as a separate cylinder, which has a longitudinal hole, or as a cylindrical hole inside the cylinder head. The bore hole should be as closely as possible with the valve seat and have a small gap. This gap is necessary to avoid possible valve seizure, since with increasing temperature the metal expands and the gap becomes smaller. However, too large a gap can lead to loss of air in the air-fuel mixture and early wear of the sleeve itself, which is wasted and can become oval.
The main advantage of the use of guide bushings is their ease of maintenance. After all, such a guide can be made with your own hands on any kind of lathes. This can be a great time saver, but on the assumption that you have special skills and experience, since an improperly manufactured sleeve can cause poor valve tightness and, as a result, accelerated wear of the entire assembly.
REPLACEMENT OF GUIDE BUSHINGS VAZ 2107
The need to replace the guide bushings occurs in the following cases:
-The appearance of a large oil consumption. Smoke-colored smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe . This suggests that the oil enters the combustion chamber, and then into the exhaust system.
-During engine operation, a distinctive sound arises from the cylinder head.
Performing certain repairs, for example, replacing valves or overhauling the entire cylinder head.
Before replacing the sleeves, remove the head from the unit. The procedure is as follows:
1. Remove the air filter “pan” and drain the coolant.
2. Unscrew all carburetor hose clamps and remove hoses. Disconnect the throttle and unscrew the air suction cable. After that, unscrew the four mounting nuts and remove the carburetor.
3. Now unscrew the nuts attaching the “pants” to the exhaust manifold .
